NSERC CREATE Training Program in BioActives

The Thompson group is involved in an exciting training program that combines lab work in synthesis and biological chemistry with career-readiness skills. This initiative is called “NSERC CREATE Training Program in BioActives” , directed by Dr. Alison Thompson.

The NSERC CREATE Training Program in BioActives empowers trainees to discover and develop new bioactive chemicals for unmet needs such as strong-yet-biodegradable materials, responsible crop protection and the rise of drug-resistant bacteria, e.g. MRSA and TB. The scientific skills for this work lie squarely in the natural sciences, including chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacology and chemical ecology.

CREATE BioActives is founded on four inter-connected pillars recognizing research excellence, industry experience, career research skills, and professional skills and business acumen. Using this foundation, CREATE BioActives trainees each build a “portfolio of experiences and expertise” to equip them for careers in industry, government and private sectors, including start-up and entrepreneurship. Industry insight mentorship, on-site placements, industry workshops, facility tours, bioactives sourcing in the field, and professional development opportunities that bridge people skills, legislation and financial matters provide complementary experiences.
